New piece, DORDÁNACHT. CANTAIREACHT. DRUMADÓIREACHT. {Droning. Chanting. Drumming}

Inspired by an article on the Ancient Music Ireland website about Vocal 'Crónán',

From the site: 'Crónán is best described as a form of vocalisation that was one of a number of singing types used in Ireland and Scotland. It is mentioned in legend as being employed by the Fianna or the mercenary army of Fionn mac Cumhaill some 2,000 years ago. They were able to create a droning sound called ‘dord’.

I was really interested in this article as it mentions how it could be similar to the sounds of Tuvan/Mongolian throat singing. Tuvan 'Kargyraa' throat singing is the main style I've been using recently in my chants and music.

Further reading: 'Another reference occurs in Irish writings from the 9th Century which include crónán as one of a number of vocal techniques that was performed both by soloists and congregations. In Scotland it is mentioned in the 17th Century and the most recent description was by O’Curry in the 19th Century. He referred to crónán as a vocal accompaniment to a melody singer: ‘A humming or droning similar in sound to the purring of a cat’'

The 'purring of a cat' note got me started experimenting with that on top of the low Kargyraa style singing. And how do we make the purring sound of a cat? We use our tongues. So I just started playing around with Kargyraa and vibrating my tongue at the same time.

Not sure if it sounds anything like what is described in the article and can never really know what sounds Fionn mac Cumhaill and his army may have conjured up!

I'm not a war/battle story obsessive by any means but I couldn't help thinking about what that may have sounded like!

Also recently inspired by the incredible views of Ben Bulben, Eagle's rock, Gleniff horseshoe and others from various trips around Sligo. So this ended up being a bit more over the top than originally planned!

On Bandcamp now and Should be up on streaming sites soon.
